  7. Create, Discover & Imagine Kids Art (Ages 6-9)

    Stretch your child’s imagination! Do you have a little artist at home that is getting bored drawing, painting, and sculpting the same things? This class is designed for kids that need more creativity in their art. The instructor with guide your child to put their art in motion.   8. Pottery (Ages 18+)

    August 5, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM @ Brambleton Center

    The Brambleton Center offers a well equipped studio to create original works of clay in both wheel and freeform. Equipment includes 13 electric wheels, a slab roller, and an assortment of tools and accessories for shaping and sculpting the clay. A variety of glazes are mixed in the studio offering about 23 colors. Class fee also includes utilizing the studio on your own during select times when classes aren't in session and the firing of pieces made during the 10 week term. Clay must be purchased through Brambleton Center at $25/25 pounds. Saturday will be an open workshop opportunity for those currently registered in a Pottery class. All pottery classes are ten week programs.

Green Ridge Recreation Center Calendar

  1. Shorin Ryu Karate (Ages 18+)

    June 12, 2019, 6:00 PM - August 28, 2019, 7:30 PM @ Green Ridge Recreation Center

    Shorin Ryu is one of the major modern Okinawan martial arts and is one of the oldest styles of karate, Okinawa is known as the birthplace of Karate. This traditional martial arts style is heavily focused on areas such as kicks, punches, katas, and weapons. Students will learn the benefits of increased balance, flexibility, fitness level, and focus as well as build confidence. Students will also learn self defense principles that are hidden within the art and unlocked to show the fighting concepts that have been handed down for generations. Michelle Behrns is not only a Shorin-Ryu instructor but also teaches kickboxing, fitness instructor and teaches Tru Self Defense. A Gi is not required but encouraged for easier movement. Twelve week class.

  2. Adult Ballet (Ages 16+)

    This is a beginning level ballet class comprised of a 30 minute barre featuring exercises to warm-up feet, legs, and arms. This is followed by 30 minutes of center work and traveling combinations to work on balance, coordination, and flexibility. Participants may wear tights, leggings, sweatpants, and either a leotard or sports top. Ballet slippers are recommended. Instructor Beth Brunelle.

  3. Swing Roanoke Dance Lessons (Ages 18+)

    Want a new way to have fun and exercise? Swing Roanoke will be teaching classes to keep your feet moving! Each seven week series of classes will cover various swing dances like East Coast Swing, 20's or 30's Charleston, Lindy Hop, and others. No partner is required and those with two left feet are welcome! No matter how many times you have come before-classes will have fresh material to learn in each series! Classes include 45 minutes of instruction followed by practice time. Instruction by Swing Roanoke. June-July will be Swing 201. July-September will be Charleston East Coast Variations.

  4. Taekwondo Mini-Series (Ages 5+)

    Taekwondo classes at Green Ridge are designed to teach martial arts and fitness in a structured but fun environment. Students can sign up individually or have the whole family try together. This class is an introduction to the basics of taekwondo.

  5. Handcoloring Landscapes (Oil Painting) (Ages 14+)

    Come and learn this antique art form to transform your photographs into yesteryear looking treasures. This class will provide sepia toned prints for you to paint with information on how to make you own prints to paint. Use of paint and supplies is included. Just bring yourself dressed in old clothes or short sleeves and an apron. A handout will be provided so you can review the information later. Teena Cook has taught photography at VWCC for 30 years and has won many awards from VA and NC Professional Photographers Association for hand coloring. All supplies and prints are provided.

  7. Maker's Nite - Easy Awesome Cookie (Age 18+)

    urn a plain sugar cookie into a work of art in a few simple steps. A custom monogram cookie stencil will be provided to students who register at least 5 days before class. All supplies and recipes included. Take home at least 3 works of art, we will eat the “seconds”! Come after work, make something fun and new, all supplies included, no experience necessary! Try a different craft without the expense of gathering the materials yourself, meet fellow “Makers” who love the creative process. Lisa Hoyt brings this series back to Green Ridge for a summer of fun on the first Monday of each month, 7-8:30 pm, $21, bring food if desired, disposable apron and gloves provided to protect clothing.

Summer Camps Calendar

  1. Green Ridge Summer Day Camp

    May 28, 2019, 7:30 AM - August 8, 2019, 6:00 PM @ Green Ridge Recreation Center

    There’s no way your kids will be bored this summer, when they sign up for full day camp at Green Ridge! This program combines the ‘healthy fun’ of Green Ridge Recreation Center and Splash Valley Water Park, with the excitement of organized activities from our experienced staff. Your camper’s week will be filled with arts, crafts, sports, games, swimming at Splash Valley and indoor pool, field trips and more. All activities and two daily snacks are included in the weekly fee. Campers must pack a daily lunch, swimsuit, towel and athletic shoes. A $25 per week deposit is due at time of registration and the remaining balance will be scheduled through automatic draft of your bank card. Green Ridge members receive an additional discount per week. Participants must be RISING Kindergarteners. Sign up for all 11 full weeks of enrichment, or simply select the weeks you need. Camp will not meet May 27, July 4 and August 9.

  2. Little Chippers Golf Camp (Ages 5-7)

    Would you like your child to learn a sport they will be able to play for the rest of their life? If so, send them to a series of weekly one day clinics led by PGA Golf professionals from local golf courses where they will learn the proper fundamentals needed to begin playing golf. The clinics will focus on learning the grip, swing, putting, chipping, golf etiquette, and life skills. Campers are required to bring their own age appropriate equipment to camp. A limited number of prearranged loaner sets are available for free by contacting the Parks and Recreation Department.

    You can’t gallop until you learn to trot. Get started on the right hoof with the equine experts at Explore Park’s Niagara Ranch, operated by Reba Farm. Saddle up for a week of adventures on horseback, with no previous experience needed. the mechanics of horsemanship - both physically and behaviorally. Good for anyone who wants to really work with, ride, and understand horses. Work with different horses and breeds daily while learning life’s lessons from a 1000 pound teammate. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Helmets and tack are included. Half-day programs focus on grooming, feeding and educational experiences with limited riding for short periods. Full-day participants will experience complete western style horseback riding lessons, featuring multiple riding sessions per day. Please bring a bagged lunch.
