Green Ridge Recreation Center Calendar

  1. Adult Ballet (Ages 16+)

    July 8, 2019, 7:30 PM - August 12, 2019, 8:30 PM @ Green Ridge Recreation Center

    This is a beginning level ballet class comprised of a 30 minute barre featuring exercises to warm-up feet, legs, and arms. This is followed by 30 minutes of center work and traveling combinations to work on balance, coordination, and flexibility. Participants may wear tights, leggings, sweatpants, and either a leotard or sports top. Ballet slippers are recommended. Instructor Beth Brunelle.

  2. Level 1 Swimming Lessons (Ages 6-12)

    Let's have fun learning to swim! This is a class for the older beginning swimmer to become comfortable and confident in the water. They will gain basic aquatic skills including; beginning swimming strokes, breath control, floating, and kicking - all of which will help to keep them safe. Games and activities will help teach them to enjoy and become adjusted to the water. In addition, they will participate in a safety lesson each lesson that will encourage them to be safe around all aquatic environments. The goal is a positive attitude towards swimming and water safety.

  3. Level 3 and Level 4 Swimming Lessons (Ages 6-12)

    Now you're really a swimmer! Swimmers in this class are very confident and comfortable in the water. All strokes are introduced and by the time they have completed both levels, they will be able to swim at least 25 yards of all six strokes. When a participant passes Level 3 they will have achieved basic water competency skills according to the new American Red Cross standards. Safety lessons become more in depth and cover more topics.

  4. Tiny Bubbles (Ages 18-36 months)

    Join your child as they discover the world of water. With your help, toddlers will experiment with arm and leg action, floating and going under water. Lots of repetition will help them become very comfortable and confident in the water. This is a fun and engaging class which will keep your child wanting to come back even as they are learning about safety and swimming skills. Parental participation is required.

  5. Baby Drops (Ages 6-18 months)

    No need to wait! Start the process of introducing your baby to the water sooner rather than later. This parent and child class will start building your baby's confidence and swimming readiness. What a fun opportunity for you and your child to explore the water and become adjusted together. Parents will learn basic water skills to keep their children safe and help them to love the water. Safety information and teaching techniques will be provided to parents. Parental participation is required.

  6. Big Waves (Ages 4-5)

    Celebrate your child's independence in the water. This is the first class that we offer that have children in the water without a caregiver. Your child may be a beginner or already comfortable in the water. Regardless, they will learn to float, kick and become proficient with arm strokes. Rolling over and treading water will be introduced. Submerging is a big part of this class since swimming requires being able to put your face in the water! If they are more advanced they will be expected to swim more independently and with less support from the instructor.

  7. Level 2 Swimming Lessons (Ages 6-12)

    Our swimmers continue to build on the basic skills learned in Level 1 in the Level 2 class. The student will become more confident and be able to swim short distances by themselves. Students in this class should be very comfortable going under the water. Emphasis in this class is on learning to float without support, alternating arms and leg actions on front and back along with rotary breathing. Safety lessons are ever present in order to ensure our participant's safety around all water environments. Fun is not forgotten either!

  8. Begin to Swim (Ages 13+)

    It's never too late to learn how to swim! Our swim instructors will provide an introductory water program designed for anyone 13 years and up that may be fearful about participation in water activities or need assistance developing their basic swimming skills. This is a comfortable, non-threatening environment and we have very patient instructors who want to help participants conquer their fear of the water and learn to swim.

  9. Little Splashes (Ages 3-4)

    Come enjoy swimming with your child as they acquire basic aquatic skills that will encourage their love of the water. This class is the foundation of swimming skills for years to come. While parental participation is required in this class, there will be some time of independent swimming. This time will help your child separate from you and help to discover if they are ready to go to the next level without you. Parents will still be provided with water safety information to keep your entire family safe around aquatic environments.

Summer Camps Calendar

  1. Green Ridge Summer Day Camp

    May 28, 2019, 7:30 AM - August 8, 2019, 6:00 PM @ Green Ridge Recreation Center

    There’s no way your kids will be bored this summer, when they sign up for full day camp at Green Ridge! This program combines the ‘healthy fun’ of Green Ridge Recreation Center and Splash Valley Water Park, with the excitement of organized activities from our experienced staff. Your camper’s week will be filled with arts, crafts, sports, games, swimming at Splash Valley and indoor pool, field trips and more. All activities and two daily snacks are included in the weekly fee. Campers must pack a daily lunch, swimsuit, towel and athletic shoes. A $25 per week deposit is due at time of registration and the remaining balance will be scheduled through automatic draft of your bank card. Green Ridge members receive an additional discount per week. Participants must be RISING Kindergarteners. Sign up for all 11 full weeks of enrichment, or simply select the weeks you need. Camp will not meet May 27, July 4 and August 9.

    Energetic, experienced staff will lead children in a summer of F-U-N with activities including arts & crafts, cooking, games, swimming, field trips and much more each week. Three field trips a week, activities and 2 daily snacks are included in weekly fee. Campers must bring a bag lunch (no glass containers, please). Balance due the Friday prior to the starting Monday of each camp. 10 weeks to choose from. KIC will not meet Monday, May 27th or Thursday, July 4th due to the holiday's. Every Friday camp will be held at the Craig Center in Vinton. Prior completion of Kindergarten is required.

  3. Archery Camp (Ages 8-14)

    Roanoke County's newest program is designed to open the world of archery to children in a safe and fun environment. The camps core content includes archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, and self-improvement. All instructors are certified by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) and have undergone a certification program referred to as BAI, 'Basic Archery Instructor.' Please note that this program will focus on the skills of archery, not hunting and your child must also have a 2019 Roanoke County Health Form on file for your summer camp program registration to be complete. This needs to be completed by close of business Wednesday prior to camp start date..

  4. Basketball Camp (Ages 7-13)

  5. Boats, Cars, Planes and Traines (Ages 3-5)

    You can’t gallop until you learn to trot. Get started on the right hoof with the equine experts at Explore Park’s Niagara Ranch, operated by Reba Farm. Saddle up for a week of adventures on horseback, with no previous experience needed. the mechanics of horsemanship - both physically and behaviorally. Good for anyone who wants to really work with, ride, and understand horses. Work with different horses and breeds daily while learning life’s lessons from a 1000 pound teammate. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Helmets and tack are included. Half-day programs focus on grooming, feeding and educational experiences with limited riding for short periods. Full-day participants will experience complete western style horseback riding lessons, featuring multiple riding sessions per day. Please bring a bagged lunch.

    Think so you don't sink! Early exposure to swim lessons in preschoolers can improve motor skills and cognitive development, strengthens social skills in a group setting, and reduces risk of drowning. Children will have a group swimming lesson, themed crafts, games, water safety lesson in a structured environment led by camp staff and certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Focus on group swim lesson will be safety first. Children will also get a chance to have supervised free play in the pools daily during camp time. Please have children dress in swimsuit, bring a towel and a change of clothes to change in afterward daily. Children must be fully potty-trained.

    In this exciting Bricks 4 Kidz camp, we use LEGO® bricks and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) principles to build amazing worlds of fun in a variety of different themes each day. Sample themes include models based on popular themes including Minecraft, Superheroes, Pokeman, Star Wars, The Lego Movie 2, How to Train your Dragon, Toy Story and more! Your child will enjoy building LEGO mosaics, 3D LEGO Builds and motorized LEGO projects. Each camper will build a custom mini-figure to take home at the end of the week, as well as receive a Bricks 4 Kidz Camp T-shirt.
