The Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) has announced Roanoke County as a 2020 Achievement Award Winner, recognizing excellence in local government programs. The award was presented for Illuminights, a new winter walk of lights at Explore Park in partnership with Center in the Square. Roanoke County is one of 21 recipients of the VACo Achievement Award this year.

Illuminights saw over 43,000 visitors during its 26 day inaugural season, raising over $450,000 in net proceeds to share between the sponsor organizations. Community and media partnerships made the event a huge success, surpassing all expectations and starting a new holiday tradition for our region.

“I want to thank all who participated in the 18th year of the Achievement Awards,” VACo Executive Director Dean Lynch said. “During these uncertain times, it’s good to know there’s this constant – counties will continue to find innovative ways to overcome complex challenges. I think it’s important to stop and recognize good work when we see it. The Achievement Awards allow us to appreciate those who help make our lives better.”
