Our History
In June 8th, 1976, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to serve adults and children with developmental disabilities through Therapeutic Recreation Services. Therapeutic Recreation Services expanded in the 1980s to include programs for adults with visual impairments. With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, Therapeutic Recreation Services began serving adults with psychiatric illnesses and head injuries. In 2005 services expanded once gain to create program areas, rather than serving participants in population groups. Therapeutic Recreation Services continues to be the leading agency in government-guided, community-based therapeutic recreation within the greater Roanoke Valley.
